Jack Brown was a resident of Surrey. He was also a teacher in Surrey for 35 years. He graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1962 with a Bachelor of Education Secondary with majors in History and Geography.
During 1970–71 he took a year off teaching to complete a Masters Degree in Arts with a concentration in Geography. As part of his Masters program he wrote a thesis titled The Historical Geography of South Surrey, British Columbia. That thesis is located in the Library at Western Washington University and at the University of British Columbia Library, Special Collections.
This website, Surrey History, began partly based on Jack’s thesis. This was an original research thesis based on original source documentation and interviews with original settlers or their descendants. As more information was researched, the website began to grow and continues to be a valued resource of Surrey’s history.
The current web site has been extensively expanded through additional research and contributions by others interested in Surrey’s History.
Jack passed away on March 22, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. This website will continue on in support of his vision, funded by the Surrey Historical Society and with the blessing of Jack’s family.
